We had an OUTSTANDING first week of school! These kids jumped right into the school year and are already familiar with the daily routine and classroom expectations. I am amazed at how quickly they have transitioned from the lazy days of summer to the quicker pace of the school year. WOW!
We spent time this week getting to know each other, familiarizing ourselves with safety guidelines and procedures, and wading into the curriculum. The children practiced reading, math, and social studies skills!
We dropped into the LMC to "taste" some brand new books! Yum!
We read about the different landforms that can be found across the United States. The children practiced locating these terms in the glossary in the back of their text books, and sketching & labeling them.
We participated in our first few School Wide reading lessons. We thought about how a supportive reading community allows us to share our reading, enjoy different types of books, and deepen our understanding through thoughtful conversation. The children took a moment to decorate the cover of their reading binder!
It was time to search for "Just right" books! The children were encouraged to choose books for their book boxes that 1) cover more than one genre 2) are personally interesting to them 3) they can read and understand 4) that serve a purpose. The children have already showed terrific reading stamina for sustained silent reading! I was amazed again!!
We attended an all school assembly on Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Sessler shared details with us about her trip to Japan over the summer. It was very interesting to learn about the differences in the school day between Japan and the United States!
Writers' workshop began this week, too! The children practiced the process of think, draw, label, and write. They sketched details about a favorite place that came to their mind. Then we labeled key words in our drawings, before we connected these ideas into interesting sentences. This was practice before we begin our autobiographies next week!
The children brought home a brief homework assignment today. They are asked to jot a few notes about different stages of their life to be included in their autobiography. Thank you for your help with this!
I loved to see the children volunteering to share their writing! We learn so much from each other!
We completed a "quick check" of concepts to be covered in unit 1 of our new math curriculum. The children practiced finding different ways to identify a number- using a picture, the digits, or writing it out using words.
We also logged into our Xtramath.org accounts to let our addition math fact practice begin! Feel free to practice xtramath at home for a few minutes each night. I will share the children's login information with you at Curriculum night next Wednesday, September 6th.
Hooray for an awesome first week of school! I can already tell it is going to be a terrific year!
Enjoy the nice long Labor Day weekend!
:)
