We started off the week gathering as a school community to honor and remember Patriot Day, September 11th. It was powerful to see so many faces that came together to pay tribute to this important day in history.
The children were exposed to new reading strategies this week that encouraged them to take important notes while reading that they could then share with a partner to discuss. This discussion deepens the children's undertsanding of their reading, and further connects them to their texts.
We are really enjoying making words during our word study lessons. The children are becoming more familiar with word patterns, and are working to quickly identify their sight words- while also improving their spelling accuracy!
The children had fun playing a game during math! One student created a number using base ten blocks, and their partner had to write this number in standard, word, and expanded form. They loved challenging each other!
Here are some snaps of the children taking notes during readers' workshop. We learned to jot down notes of interest- not everything we read! The children then used these notes to meet up with their "turn & talk" buddies to have meaningful discussions about their reading. We practiced keeping our eyes on the speaker, taking turns, and staying focused! They did a terrific job!
Another GREAT week of 2nd grade is in the books!
