Busy Bees in 2-2!

The children brought in their Landmark Challenge projects this week! Everyone had the opportunity to present their unique learning to the class! We loved EVERY SINGLE presentation. The children did a phenomenal job! Thank you to the parents for helping the children learn, explore, and discover information about our country's most notable landmarks!
Danny created a Keynote presentation on his iPad about the Liberty Bell.

Alex created a model of the Grand Canyon with the Colorado River cutting right through it!

Kelly wrote a book about the Statue of Liberty- and illustrated it!
Tyler created a model of the Golden Gate Bridge out of Legos.
Amina brought in a miniature model of Mount Rushmore!

Faiz made a model of the Statue of Liberty out of clay, and he created a Power Point Presentation to help him share his facts!

Ava made a Power Point Presentation to share facts about the White House, and she also used a book and a pamphlet to highlight interesting information for the kids!

Nick made a news cast from home about the Lincoln Memorial! His mom came in to help us view it!
Maeve made a shoe box diorama about the Grand Canyon!

John made a poster about the White House, including our very own "Visitor Guest Passes" that he made at home for us to wear!

Demetra made a model of the Washington Monument!
Erick built his own White House out of Legos!

Katie Rose made a poster full of facts about the Gateway Arch in St. Louis (complete with family photos of her visit!) She also made a model of the Arch.

Anna made a book about the Liberty Bell.

Jennifer made a book about the Statue of Liberty.

Chloe created a model of the Washington Monument.

Evalin created a poster full of facts about the Liberty Bell, and she also made a model of it out of clay!

Nico prepared a Power Point Slideshow to share his facts about the World War II Memorial. He also made a very detailed model of it out of Legos!

Andrew created a model of the White House.

After viewing all of these wonderful projects, we decided to have a "Landmark Fair" in our classroom" We invited Mrs. Coyle and Mrs. Glaser's first grade class to come in and see all of our hard work! We practiced a shorter version of the most important facts we wanted to share, and we had so much fun presenting our projects to the first graders!

Mrs. Sessler also popped in to see the children's projects!

Mr. Gries popped in, too! He was very interested in the children's work!

In math, we started Unit 5 on Geometry. The children looked critically at shapes, identifying attributes such as color, size, shape, number of sides, etc.

We also discussed parallel lines, right angles, endpoints, and line segments!
The children learned about polygons. We learned that they are CLOSED shapes with STRAIGHT sides that you can trace over with your finger without overlapping any other lines.
We practiced making a series of polygons on the geoboards, starting with the triangle and working up to the octagon!

Now that our citizenship unit has come to an end, it was time to start thinking about holidays around the world! We discussed Hanukkah this week- reading two of my favorite Hanukkah stories:

and

We also talked a little bit about Christmas in Mexico! We read

and then the children made their own poinsettias to make our classroom a little bit more festive!

It was Evalin's week to be our start student.
Her mom and dad came in to help us see how a submarine works in the water! We learned that the submarine takes in water to add weight and drop lower in the water, and it takes in air and pushes out the water to go higher in the water. What a neat experiment!
Evalin read a story to the class about the adventures of an adorable little puppy named Boo!
What a sweet family! We are so fortunate to have Evalin in our class this year! You had a wonderful star week!!
