Once Upon a Time in 2-2...

From the desk of Mrs. Schmidt...

The children all looked wonderful for their school pictures! They were all so excited to have Miss O’Sullivan join us for them!

In Math, we looked at different shortcuts to help us remember our facts better, such as turn-around facts and doubles. We also explored the relationship between addition and subtraction and discussed how we can make fact families. We continue to practice our math facts on xtramath.org to increase our speed and accuracy.

This week we read a Realistic Fiction story called “My Name is Yoon.” In it, a girl from Korea moves to America and has to adjust to life here. She learns to love how her name looks in English as much as it does in Korean, meaning “Shining Wisdom” in both languages. In this story and our leveled books, we spent a lot of time making predictions and confirming those predictions. Settling in America was the theme in all of our guided reading books, so our discussions centered around the
challenges the characters faced in doing so. For grammar, we have started using quotation marks. This was a challenging skill for us, and one that we will continue to work on all year.

Once upon a time in a classroom not far away, we started discovering common elements of Fairy Tales. Through a sorting game with partners, we wrote a short Fairy Tale “on the fly” using elements from the categories of good and bad characters, setting, and other Fairy Tale features. What fun was had by all!

We continue to keep “movin’” with our Motion Unit. We were kept “grounded” as we explored the part friction plays in slowing down/stopping movements. Experimenting with different textures of sand paper, waxed paper, aluminum foil, our rug, and the tile floor, we measured how far pennies could be launched. We discovered that the surface does make a difference in the amount of friction is created. We imagined a world without gravity and discussed its role in producing motion.
