A number of hands-on learning activities took place this week!

The children practiced estimating measurements this week. We started off by estimating how many "Maeves" long our classroom is! Of course then we had to check to see if we were right... Our classroom is 9 3/4 Maeves long. :)
We decided that not everyone knows what a "Maeve" is, so we discussed STANDARD units of measure that are familiar to everyone. We decided that a yard is an appropriate unit of measure for the length of our classroom, and it is a unit that is customary in the United States, so we tried it again!
It was a group effort!
After comparing units in the US Customary system with units in the metric system. We looked carefully at HOW to measure. We looked at where the ZERO is marked on the measuring tool. Sometimes it is directly at the end, and sometimes its not! We also looked at an inch and a centimeter zoomed in on the white board. We looked at where the halfway mark is and decided when we should round up or round down.
The children were ready to practice! They decided which tool (tape measure, ruler, meter stick, yard stick, etc.) would be best to measure which items.
The children got to work measuring the distance around each other's heads, wrists, and ankles, as well as their height and the height of their desks and chairs. They measured both in inches and centimeters.
The children learned the word "peRIMeter" this week. We noted the little word "rim" hiding inside it as a reminder that it is the distance around an object. The children measured the distance around the objects they brought in for the shapes museum!
This is a picture of the children watching each other's Australia commercials in the LMC. They did a great job of actively listening to each others' projects! They made a note about something that was interesting or enticing about each commercial, and then they voted at the end for their favorite Australian territory! The children used their iPads this week to blog about their learning during our rock unit! They came up with interesting facts that they wanted to remember and share with their classmates.
It was Chloe's week to be our star student!
It was so nice to have Mr. Ho in as our special guest on Friday afternooon.
Chloe and her dad showed the children how they could turn a drop of water into a magnifying glass! The children actually viewed print underneath Chloe's homemade magnifying glass (a paper clip and a drop of water) and they saw firsthand that the print got larger! The kids made the connection that eyeglasses work in a very similar way to enlarge print!
Chloe shared a fun book with her classmates- "If You Take a Mouse to the Movies!"
A sweet picture of Chloe and her dad! We are so lucky to know a girl as bright, talented, hard working, and interesting as Chloe! We learned so much about her this week!
I can't believe we reached the very end of our Star Student schedule this week!
We will be having some surprise "star" guests pop in the next few Fridays
to share a little about themselves as well as a favorite story with the class!
